Welcome to the memorial page for

Patricia Ann (Futrell) Trevarthen

August 2, 1938 ~ May 28, 2015 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Patricia Ann Futrell Trevarthen, 76, died peacefully on May 28, 2015 in Boca Raton, Florida, in her home surrounded by family, friends and her beloved Oliver.  She was in the care of Hospice By The Sea, as she chose to finally surrender her 27-year battle with cancer and join her daughter Julia Ann Trevarthen, who lost her battle with cancer on April 11, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. William (Bill) Roy Trevarthen, her daughter and son-in-law, Susan LaNelle Trevarthen and Camilo Jose Mejia, and their daughter Linda Lilibeth Mejia and her brother Jonathan Martinez.

Patty was born August 2, 1938 in Paducah, Kentucky to Harold Wilmont Futrell and Beulah Mae Boyles Futrell, both deceased.  She is survived by her sisters Martha (Mimi) and Nancy, and brother Harold Futrell.  Her second date with Bill was her sixteenth birthday party; they graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1956, and they married on July 11, 1959.

Patty was an intelligent, vivacious, fun-loving woman who loved all kinds of crafts, but loved quilting above all else.  She held responsible positions in local, state, regional and national quilting organizations, rising to the office of Vice President of The National Quilt Association. She was devoted to her family, and also to her community. She was a member of the Junior Service League of Boca Raton, the Boca Raton Historical Society, the Junior League of Boca Raton, the Garden Club, the Antique Club of Boca Raton, and various other community organizations.

Patty studied at Duke University, and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City in 1958-59.  She worked first in her family's food brokerage business, the Boyles Brokerage Company, and then as an executive secretary in advertising sales for WHAS radio/TV in Louisville, KY to support the family until Bill's graduation from the University of Louisville College of Dental Medicine. Upon completion of his residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in 1972, the family moved to Boca Raton.

A life-long supporter of education, Patty worked at the schools her daughters attended (Gulfstream and St Andrews), trained and worked as a travel agent, and then was certified as a paralegal at Florida Atlantic University in the mid-1970s.  She worked for the law firms of Scott Dickinson and Lavalle Wachna as a real estate paralegal.

In 1985, Patty and Jane Hill, also of Boca Raton, founded the Gold Coast Quilters Guild.  She was co-owner of The Quilter's Marketplace in Delray Beach, until her initial encounter with cancer in 1988 forced her to sell her interest.  She was a long term member of the Third Monday Quilt Club.

A memorial service celebrating her life, followed by a reception, will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 4 pm at Grace Community Church, 600 West Camino Real, Boca Raton, FL 33486.  The family requests donations for the Gold Coast Quilter's Guild, PO Box 2333
Boca Raton, FL  33427-2333, in lieu of flowers.
