We met the Hansens thirty years ago moving in across the street. They were relatively new arrivals as well. Marilynn and Claire had much in common being nurse midwives; they became instant friends and have remained so for the last thirty years. Of course Jan was part of the package along with Ethan and Francesca. We got to know Jan so well and he too became a cherished friend. We raised our families together and our daughter Alison became a dear friend of Francesca.
Jan was great company, never a dull moment, superior intellect - discussing local politics to world peace. Jan was one of the most informed person we knew, he had a great grasp of history, you would not want to play Trivial Pursuit with him unless you liked to loose!
We will miss his childhood delight around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. His trains were an annual event for many years and of course the baby stork outside the house for Claire's birthday tops it all. Seeing Jan in his front yard for hours, forever racking leaves is an image we will never forget.
Jan never forgave Chuck as Traffic Judge when he signaled him out in open court "Hey, that is my neighbor Jan" as Jan's face turned purple with embarrassment.
We consider Jan a real hero in the way he handled his illness dispute its debilitating effects, he was cheerful, optimistic and brave to the end. We last saw Jan, Saturday, July 4th, Claire and Jan stopped by our new digs, and Jan's biggest complaint was that he couldn't drive.
Through Claire's unflinching devotion and management of his very complicated treatment, no doubt that gave Jan these extra years- to cherish Francesca's marriage to Mattheiu, Ethan's medical career and the news that Ethan and Alexis will soon be parents.
The years on Laing Street, raising our families together, were so special. They say you can't pick your family, but we sure can choose our friends. Farewell dear friend.
Love,
Marilynn & Chuck

I had the pleasure of growing up next door to Jan. I cannot tell you how happy our childhood was and of our adventures as they were many. Jan was creative and kind and especially tolerant of the only girl in the group. I will miss this and the wonderful person he became;our sincerest sympathy to you and your children from all of the Connors family.

Claire & Family
I was so saddened to learn of Jan's passing this morning.
For ten years we have maintained a professional relationship.
Challenge upon challenge and almost all resolved.
In trying to know him i would get him to share parts of his
early career and what his family was like. He was very proud
and loved all of you very much.. His wonderful spirit will be missed.
My heartfelt sympathies to all of you.
