Thomas Michael Costello, Mike to his friends and family, was born in Los Angeles in 1932. Mike studied at Notre Dame University before being drafted into the Navy during a time of peace between the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He met the love of his life for sixty-four years on a blind date in Miami; later, Marcia would visit him in Indiana and be escorted off campus because she was indecent in Bermuda shorts.
Mike moved his family to Miami in 1962 and accepted a position teaching accounting at Miami Dade University. In 1971 the family moved to Boca Raton, where Mike taught accounting for twenty-three years at Florida Atlantic University. Mike was fond of referring to his students as comrades, which raised the eyebrows of his colleagues. Mike’s sense of humor was infectious.
Mike had a successful accounting firm in Boca Raton for many years; his son, John, now follows in his footsteps.
Mike was an avid lover of nature; he and Marcia loaded their VW van every summer with camping gear and canoes and six children and drove across the country, stopping at every national park along the way. One summer the family visited Nantahala to learn white-water rafting on the river; as the family of eight piled out of the van one by one, they were treated with astonished stares.
Those who knew him best remember Mike as a man with a kind and gentle heart.
Mike is survived by his wife, Marcia, and his six children: Victoria, Kevin, Laura, Mary, Anne, and John. Mike and Marcia have fourteen grandchildren with whom he had loving and cherished relationships.
