Teresa Herrero Obituary

Teresa Romagosa Herrero

July 21, 1947 - June 17, 2024

Boca Raton, Florida – Teresa “Tessie” Romagosa Herrero,  of Boca Raton, FL died on June 17, 2024 at the age of 76 at home surrounded by family members.

Tessie was born the child of Freddie and Matilde Romagosa on July 21, 1947 in Havana, Cuba. Her siblings are Alfre Romagosa, Frankie Romagosa, George Romagosa, and  Col. Cris Romagosa Stone, USAF Retired. While raised in Cuba, Tessie’s family chose to send her to the United States for high school because of the Communist takeover of Cuba in 1959. She attended the Sacred Heart High School in New Orleans and lived within the school building. Her class was among the last to board at Sacred Heart.

After high school, Tessie attended Maryville College in St. Louis, MO, graduating with Honors at the age of 19 with degrees in History and French. She met her beloved husband, Dr. Emilio Edward Herrero, on a beach in Miami when she was 18 years old. Emilio, also from Cuba, had recently been released as a POW after his participation in the Bay of Pigs while trying to overthrow the Communist Cuban government. The beach encounter led to a courtship through her college years and culminated with their March 1968 wedding.

Tessie’s married life mostly consisted of being a stay-at-home Mom while raising her four children: Edward Herrero (Nancy), Dr. Teresa “Teri” Herrero Murphy (Michael), Dr. Andrew Herrero, and Carlos Herrero (Sarah), while also prioritizing her volunteer work and graduate studies. The main focus of her volunteer work was Birthline, a service that provided support for young and often unwed mothers. Her many years of service led to being named President of the organization in the early 80’s. Soon before the last of her children left for college, Tessie graduated with Honors with a Masters in Sociology (4.0 GPA) with a concentration in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University, which combined her focus on continued learning and her life of service. She launched a new career In her field. Tessie became an authority in Affordable Housing, and produced multiple publications that she presented at various conferences in Raleigh, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Vancouver. She was ultimately hired as the Assistant Director of Children and Youth Services for Broward County.

After retirement, Tessie continued with the pursuits that had given her the most joy: travel, reading, genealogy, all things French, antique shopping, dancing, time with her grandchildren, and of course more service work as she volunteered for many years with Ascension Church in working with the underprivileged members of the Parish.

Besides her husband, children and siblings, Tessie is survived by her grandchildren: Alexander Taylor, Andrew Taylor, Nicholas Taylor, Anna Herrero, Matthew Herrero, Katie Herrero and Emma Herrero.  The memorial mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church in Boca Raton, FL (7250 North Federal Highway) on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at 11:00 am. This will be preceded by a visitation at Glick Family Funeral Home (3600 North Federal Highway) in Boca Raton on Monday, June 24, 2024 from 4pm -7pm.
