Sylvia Mariano Obituary

Sylvia Mariano

September 4, 1925 – November 27, 2021  (96)

Daughter of Benjamin and Bertha Abramson and one of seven siblings  - now all departed

Sylvia was a resident of Boca Raton for 44 years, and Saturday evening passed peacefully in her sleep.  Earlier that day Sylvia was sitting at her favorite spot at the assisted living facility where she had been residing for the past 4 years   The sun was shining upon her lovely face, while she and daughter attempted once again to sing God Bless America.  As was their daily ritual, they called each son Lanny Rogg and Russ Rogg to share words of love.  Hearing their voices always brought a smile to her face.   She said it was the best part of her day.  Later that day, mom said she didn’t feel well and we transferred her to bed.   Never crossed our minds that today would have been her last singing performance.  She laughed, she loved, and she lived.

But let's go back in time and get a glimpse of Sylvia's background.  Sylvia's passion for singing began quite some time ago at the tender age of 7.   She grew up in the Bronx in NY, where she and her family of 9 lived in a small but charming apartment.  To escape doing her share of chores, Sylvia would often escape and hide out in the backyard of their apartment building.  One could often hear Sylvia singing at the top of her lungs, her only audience being the neighbor’s cat sitting on the window sill and the laundry hanging out to dry!   Someone finally did hear her sing, because she was asked to sing on a regular basis for the Jewish Radio Station WEVD until she was 11 years of age.  Sylvia once shared the fact that her most exciting gig was volunteering for the USO and being introduced by the one and only Sophie Tucker.

Some years later during World War II, Sylvia began working as a hairdresser.  It wasn't long after she began working in one particular barber shop, when a very handsome soldier walked into the shop.  Shortly after they met, this soldier captured Sylvia's heart.  Knowing this was the woman of his dreams, Al Rogg asked Sylvia to marry him and in the next several years they had three children two boys and one girl.

Sylvia was the rock and foundation of this family.   One of the many great things we loved about mom, she embraced each of her children’s partners and their offspring.  The family grew.  She is survived by her sons Lanny Rogg, Russ Rogg (wife Cyndi) and daughter Sheri Galante (significant partner Neil Evangelista).  Grandchildren:  Ben Rogg; Matthew Rogg, Shayna Rogg, Angie and James, great grandchildren: Isabel Camryn and Adyn.  Also our "sisters" forever, Evelyn Ross and Lynn Mariano.  Mom loved you so much.
