Susan Cary Eckman, 81, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away recently at her home. She will be remembered fondly by her family and friends for her lifelong love of astrology, her deep affection for dogs, and her curious nature.
Born on October 24, 1943, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Susan grew up in Evanston, Illinois. After graduating from Evanston Township High School in 1961, she went on to study at Mississippi University for Women and later earned a degree in the arts from Kendall College in 1965.
For much of her life, Susan worked as a medical transcriptionist, a career that suited her preference for late-night hours and allowed her time to pursue her other interests: astrology and her love for dogs.
She first became interested in astrology at an early age, a field that provided her with a sense of purpose. She began her studies in the late 1960s in Chicago, and went on to open a private practice in Louisville in 1975, where she offered guidance and insight to clients who sought it. Over the years, Susan also taught and lectured in the community and occasionally appeared in the media, produced content for Dial-A-Horoscope and local radio shows, and provided chart readings for Kentucky Derby racers.
Susan’s love of dogs, particularly Whippets and Greyhounds, was another defining aspect of her life. While living in Kentucky, she showed Whippets and enjoyed the companionship of these graceful dogs. Later, in Boca Raton, Susan found joy in rescuing retired racing Greyhounds, providing them with loving homes. Her final Greyhound, Hunter, was by her side when she passed, and he has been rehomed to another compassionate Greyhound enthusiast.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, John H. Eckman and Beulah C. (Bissen) Eckman, her brother, John Thomas "Tommy" Eckman, and her brother-in-law, Frank D. Miller. She is survived by her sister, Alyce A. (Eckman) Miller; her brother, Peter J. Eckman; her nephew, Frank D. Miller; niece, Elizabeth Miller-Tyson (Michael Tyson); and grandnephew, Vaughn F. Miller.
A private service and burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Susan’s honor can be made to Awesome Greyhound Adoptions at http://awesomegreyhoundadoptions.org, an organization dedicated to the rescue and care of Greyhounds.
May Susan rest in peace, forever reunited with her family, friends and beloved dogs in the afterlife.
