Sandra Scharrer Wargo Obituary

Sandra “Sandy” Sue Scharrer Wargo was born in Miami, Florida on July 30, 1959 and passed away on August 27, 2023 surrounded by her family at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. A true Florida native, she lived her life in South Florida—Coral Gables and later Boca Raton—with the exception of her time at THE Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Sandy began her teaching career at Dunbar Elementary in Miami, shortly after her 1984 Florida State graduation. She took a brief hiatus from teaching, choosing to follow her parents’ example and take to the skies, becoming an Eastern Airlines flight attendant. She returned to Dunbar Elementary for a couple more years before focusing on building her family and relocating to Boca Raton in 1990. She welcomed her first son, Eric, in 1988, her daughter, Ashley, in 1991, and her third child, Matthew, in 1994. Sandy lived her life for her children.

Shortly after moving to Boca, she started attending St. Paul Lutheran Church in Boca Raton, launching what would be a life of service in both the church and in the school for over 30 years. Sandy went back to teaching in 2001 at St. Paul and continued for the next 21 years, spending 18 of those years with her beloved second graders. Sandy became what it meant to be in second grade at St. Paul, and her students remember her patience, her love, her incredible ability to bring the best out of them, and her never-ending supply of Starbursts and hugs. Her children remember the same qualities, with the addition of her wit, her perseverance, and her creative use of language during Florida State football games (i.e., “Sugar, Honey, and Iced Tea” and “Get ‘em! Squash ‘em! Break ‘em in two!”)

Sandy loved the beach, her Seminoles, her family and pets, her wonderful friends, and the many students that passed through her classroom.

Preceded in death by her father, Fred T. Scharrer, and her mother, Betty Scharrer, Sandy is survived by her sister, Patricia Hollinger; her three children: Eric, Ashley, and Matthew; Her two daughters-in-law: Joele (Eric) and Abbey (Matthew); her grandson, Trey; her two precocious cats: Nole and Tally; as well as three dog grandchildren: Winston, Maddie, and Bowden, and two cat grandchildren: Oliver and Theo.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 10:30 am. A reception will be held in the Family Life Center following the service. Given Sandy’s long love of Florida State, the family asks for all attendees to dress in Florida State colors (garnet and gold), or Florida State attire. The family is also establishing a scholarship for future students to be able to attend St. Paul Lutheran School to honor Sandy’s legacy and love of her church and school home.
