Robert Frederick Schachel, 79, a devoted father and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. He was affectionately known to his family and friends as “Bob” or “Bobby.” Born on October 29, 1946, to John Schachel and Dorothy M. Schachel (née Kappler), he grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated from Teaneck High School in 1964, where he played soccer and earned a varsity letter in track as a pole vaulter.
Following graduation, and after working a short while for Lipton Tea, Bob enlisted in the New Jersey Army National Guard and in the Army Reserve, where he served faithfully and with pride from 1967 to 1972. He was honorably discharged.
Bob spent most of his professional life in the trucking industry, working as a salesman and regional manager. At twenty-two, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Schachel (née Hughes), with whom he shared twenty-eight years of marriage and two children, Patricia and Robert.
A lifelong country music enthusiast, Bob played drums in several bands throughout his life under the stage name “Bobby Scott.” He performed with Tex Ritter, Smokey Warren and the Black Diamond Singers feat. Dottie Mae, and Johnny Hedges and the Goldrush, creating memories that he cherished for decades.
Bob raised his family in Teaneck and later moved to Boca Raton, Florida, in 1989. Widowed in 1998, he later shared many meaningful years with his beloved companion, Carolyn J. Embry, until her passing in 2011. Above all, Bob’s greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. He believed deeply in community and gave generously of his time—coaching little league teams, cheering proudly for his grandsons’ marching band, lending a hand to neighbors and friends, or offering a listening ear to anyone who needed one. His heart was wide, steady, and filled with love.
Bob was also an enthusiastic sports fan. He remained loyal to the New York Giants and Yankees, and he happily adopted the Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, and Florida State Seminoles in support of his children and grandchildren. He loved fishing, the ocean, singing, animals, and a good bowl of soup.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (“Patsy”); his parents; his parents-in-law, Peter M. Hughes and Patricia B. Hughes; and his brother-in-law, Peter Hughes. He is survived by his children, Patricia A. Tozzi and son-in-law Jamie Tozzi; Robert C. Schachel and daughter-in-law Kathryn A. Schachel; his brother, John Schachel, Sr., and nephew John Robert Schachel; nieces Allison and Amanda (née Lingham); and his treasured grandchildren—Christopher, Danny, Curtis, Thomas, and Mickenzie—all of whom brought immense pride and joy to his life.
