Robert Lawrence "Bob" Rice, 89, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025. He was born on June 3, 1935, in Monroe, Michigan, to Christine (Coleman) and Rudolph Martin Rice.
Bob carried forward the strong work ethic instilled by his parents throughout his life, beginning on his family’s mink farm. Continuing as a newspaper boy, golf caddy and assembly lineman at Ford Motor Company, these formative experiences shaped the determination and versatility that would define his character.
Beginning in 1954, Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Following his Army service, he pursued higher education through the GI Bill at Michigan State University, earning his undergraduate degree. His commitment to military service led him back to the armed forces, this time with the U.S. Air Force, where he served with distinction until receiving an honorable discharge in 1962. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After completing his military service, Bob furthered his education at the University of Michigan, where he earned his master's degree.
In 1971, Bob moved his family to Boca Raton, Florida. He instilled his love for travel and adventure in his three daughters, creating lasting memories and traditions that continue through generations. He cherished every moment with them and took immense pride in watching his grandchildren grow, sharing with them his wisdom, love of learning, and zest for life. Bob’s devotion to his family, including his two beautiful sisters, was immeasurable.
A teacher at high schools in Michigan and Florida, including Boca Raton Community High School, and at Florida Atlantic University, Bob’s passion for education defined a distinguished career spanning more than five decades. Throughout his tenure, he changed generations of students with his engaging teaching style and unwavering commitment to their success.
Bob is survived by his loving daughters: Laura Rice (Steven) Paden, Juliean Rice (William) Charouhis, and Roberta Rice Blitch; his cherished grandchildren: Connor (Marisa) Paden, Samuel Tucker Blitch, Maris Virginia Paden, Alexandra Elizabeth Blitch, Lily Elizabeth Paden, William Alexander Charouhis, Alexa Grace Charouhis, Avery Elizabeth Mackensie Charouhis, and Nicholas Christopher Charouhis; and his devoted sisters, Judy Gural and Sandra Comstock, and his dear friend, Betty Cam.
Bob’s charismatic presence and radiant smile lit up every room. His genuine interest in others and natural gift for storytelling drew people in. He never stopped asking hard questions, and encouraged everyone he met to answer the existential question for themselves – “what’s it all about?” Bob's greatest legacy lies in the countless lives he inspired through his warmth, curiosity, and generous spirit.
