Pedro Castro Obituary

Pedro Castro completed his earthly mission and entered eternal life on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at The Palace in Kendall, Florida, surrounded by his children on Father’s Day.

Born in 1928 in Pinar del Río, Cuba, to Agustín and Lutgarda Castro, Pedro lived a life defined by integrity, perseverance, and deep devotion to family. At 39, he courageously emigrated from Havana, Cuba, to the United States with his wife and two young children in search of freedom and opportunity, living in Tampa, Boca Raton, and Miami, Florida.

Pedro began his working life on the family farm in Puerto Esperanza. Yearning for more, he moved to Havana, after he met and married Berta Díaz, his beloved wife of 69 years. Together, they scraped and saved from his chandelier factory job and her teacher’s salary to start their own successful grocery store. Their peaceful, thriving life was upended by the Communist regime. Pedro’s store and belongings were confiscated, and he was imprisoned for opposing tyranny. His faith and spirit remained, even as his liberty was threatened. Ever the optimist, Pedro looked forward and upward.

Starting anew in America in 1967 without resources or English-language skills, he worked ferociously—often holding three jobs a day—to support his family. His work ethic and belief in a better future were unmatched. With Berta by his side, they turned setbacks into opportunities, eventually building a successful residential construction business that helped many of his workers and family members acquire their own homes.

A proud American citizen since 1980, Pedro voted in every subsequent U.S. election and remained deeply engaged in world affairs. During the Mariel boatlift, he, his brother Jesus “Chicho,” and other fearless friends made the perilous journey across the ocean to rescue his mother, brother Servando, and family from Cuba’s regime. Known affectionately as “El Jefe,” he became a mentor, provider, and pillar of support, aiding many family members in starting new lives in the U.S.

Pedro was preceded in death by his beloved bride, Berta Lilia, who passed away in December 2024, and by his siblings Evelia, Aida, Ana, Joseíto, Jesús, and Sergio. He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Miguel and Servando, and cherished sister-in-law Olga Castro.

His legacy lives on through his children, Pedro Agustín and daughter-in-law Esther; Teresita and son-in-law Rick; his grandchildren and their spouses—Mandy & Todd, Daniel & Stephanie, Peter & Lindsay, Ricky & Rachel, Natalie & Brian—and his great-grandchildren: Gabby, William, Cooper, Pierson, Kendall, Maddie, Dante, Dawson, Jaxson, Hayden, Dakota, and Bryson. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

Pedro’s life stands as a testament to enduring faith, sacrificial love, and unyielding strength in the face of hardship.
