Paul James Calcanes, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born on March 6, 1931, in Richmond Hill, New York, to Dimitrios and Panagiota (Lavas) Calcanes, who had emigrated from Greece. He was the youngest of five siblings: Nicholas, John, Nora, and Stella.
From an early age, Paul had a deep love for learning and music. He graduated as valedictorian from Richmond Hill High School in 1949. Following high school, he pursued his passion for music and studied classical piano at The Juilliard School.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Japan and served during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he continued his education and earned a degree in Aircraft Design from the Academy of Aeronautics. He later received a Bachelor of Science from Hofstra University and a Master of Science from Adelphi University.
In 1957, Paul married the love of his life, Patricia Barry, and together they built a life centered on family, raising four children. Paul was truly the heart of the family—the one who brought everyone together with his warmth, wisdom, and steady presence.
Paul worked as an aeronautical engineer at Grumman Corporation, contributing his expertise to the field he loved. He also dedicated much of his life to education, teaching at various universities and high schools. For 20 years, he was a beloved teacher at Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, New York, where he inspired generations of students.
In 1990, Paul and Patricia moved to Boca Raton, Florida. Even in retirement, Paul continued to stay active in his community, working as a park ranger at Sugar Sand Park, where he enjoyed sharing his love of nature with others.
Paul had many passions, including music, the beach, gardening, and most of all, spending time with his family. He will always be remembered for his calming presence, kindness, and the quiet strength that touched everyone who knew him.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his children, Suzanne O’Neil (Russ), James Calcanes, Lisa Calcanes (Joya), and Stephen Calcanes (Martha); his grandchildren, Shannon Oleyourryk (Patrick), Christopher O’Neil (Allison), Courtney Trethric (Ellyse), and Nicole Calcanes; and his great-grandchild, Kieran Oleyourryk.
Paul’s life was one of dedication—to his family, his country, his students, and the pursuits he loved. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
