Muriel Theresa Beckett, née Dodge, of Lighthouse Point, Florida passed away peacefully on October 7th, 2024 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Muriel was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1946. She was the 4th of five children; Albert, Thomas, Rosemary, and Florence. Though her earlier years were marked with adversity, she was carried through by the close fellowship of her siblings. Like many women of this thankfully bygone era, her ambitions were closely circumscribed by the social mores of the day. Despite this, she was determined to enter the medical field and graduated from Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. For decades, until her well-deserved retirement in 2011, she diligently worked in her role as an Operating Room Nurse. She worked hard to treat her patients' and coworkers with kindness and respect.
Muriel was a lover of music and a voracious reader. She was a dedicated basketball fan and an expert skier. She was married to Hugh Beckett in 1978 and they made a beautiful home for themselves first in Needham, Massachusetts and then in Lighthouse Point, Florida. Together they had three children: Hugh Jr, Scott, and Kate. Muriel was a loving mother, patient but also strong. She is survived by the above as well as her sister Rose Matanes. Though her light was dimming due to her affliction, to her great joy she was able to meet her three granddaughters Lucy, Eliza, and Yemaya. We will all miss her.
No services are planned at this time, though a memorial will be announced to be held in the Spring. Everyone reading this is encouraged to donate to the Alzheimer's Association at http://alz.org or plant a tree in Muriel's memory.
