Maria Apparecida Madeira Miranda passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at 94 years of age, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born nearly a century ago in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she lived a long, resilient, and remarkable life. In her final years, Maria Apparecida faced the natural decline that comes with age with the same quiet strength that defined her throughout her life, and she departed gently — reuniting, as we believe, with the parents and siblings she always spoke of and dearly missed.
Maria Apparecida was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She was the only woman in her graduating class at the Escola Nacional de Engenharia (National School of Engineering), a distinction that spoke volumes about her intellect and determination at a time when such achievements were rare for women.
She began her career as a young mathematics tutor and went on to build a lifelong professional legacy at the Tribunal da Justiça do Trabalho in Rio de Janeiro. Well before she turned 50, she faced and defeated breast cancer — and retired on her own terms, having left an indelible mark on all who worked alongside her.
Her drive and values were deeply rooted in the example set by her parents: her father, Benjamin, a medical doctor she spent her life aspiring to honor, and her mother, Eunice, who devoted herself to raising six children and provided the steady, loving foundation from which Maria Apparecida and her siblings grew.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Maria Apparecida was a woman of great warmth and depth. She was a talented dancer and singer, loved the beach, and was a world traveler who was already exploring different continents as early as the 1960s. Above all, she loved conversation. Her broad knowledge allowed her to engage deeply on an extraordinary range of subjects, and those who spent time with her rarely left without learning something new. Her passion for CR Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro's beloved football club, brought her tremendous joy throughout her life.
Maria Apparecida is survived by her daughter, Monica Miranda Mendes; her grandson, Daniel Miranda Cavalcanti; her granddaughter, Gabriela Miranda Santos; her great-grandchildren, Olivia Maria, Julia Helen, and Gabriel Cavalcanti; and her granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Haraldson, whom she held in great affection. She is also survived by her younger sister, Cecilia, who remains in Brazil and will feel her absence deeply.
Maria Apparecida's greatest legacy is the family she leaves behind. Through decades of love, sacrifice, and intention, she built a foundation that continues to sustain all of us. The values her father passed to her, she passed to us — and through us, they will carry forward. Above all, she leaves behind the lasting impression of a strong, independent woman — one whose example continues to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. The world is a better place because she was in it, and she will be profoundly missed.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Saint Jude Catholic Church, 21689 Toledo Road, Boca Raton, FL 33433.
