Celebrating the Life of Linda Schaffner Downes
Linda Schaffner Downes, a woman known for her grace, warmth, and vibrant spirit, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, in Highland Beach, Florida. She was 78 years old.
A Life Well Lived
Born on August 7, 1947, in Queens, New York, Linda carried a lifelong passion for education. She devoted her career to shaping young minds, beginning as a middle school teacher of English and History before moving into leadership roles as a department head. She later served as the long-time Director of Admission at The Tower School in Marblehead, Massachusetts, where she became a beloved and influential presence in the community.
Linda’s life journey took her from Long Island to New York City, then to the North Shore of Boston, before she ultimately retired to Florida. In Highland Beach, she embraced the warmth, beauty, and friendships that filled her final years.
Linda will be remembered for her kindness, strength, passion for books and entertaining, and genuine interest in others. She built a life centered on deep connections with family and friends, and she found joy in life’s simple, meaningful moments.
Family
Linda is survived by her brother, Charles Schaffner of Moorestown, New Jersey; her eldest son, Chapman Downes of New York City, and his wife, Joelle Downes, along with their daughters, Sosie and Peyton; and her youngest son, Chester Sharp of Woodbridge, Connecticut, and his wife, Emily Sharp, along with their children, Henrik and Lucy.
She is also lovingly remembered by Maria Bengtsson-May of St. Catharines, Ontario—whom Linda cherished as a daughter—along with her husband, Gary May, and their children, Julia and Johan.
The family would like to thank the wonderful friends and the Highland Towers community for their companionship and care that enriched Linda’s life and brought her so much joy and comfort.
