Leonard J. Derkowski Sr, 89 of Delray Beach, Florida died peacefully in his sleep at Manor Care Nursing Home, Boca Raton, Florida on December 22, 2020, Leonard was born on May 25, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Alex Henry Derkowski and Rose Agnes Wojczynski-Derkowski. He was married to Ann C. Speller-Derkowski who preceded him in death.
He attended Bowen High School in Chicago.
Leonard Joined the U.S. Navy and honorably served during the Korean War. Much of his service time was spent in combat providing fire support for U.S. Forces on the Destroyer DD-540 USS Twining off the coast of North Korea. His ship was awarded two Battle Stars for actions against enemy forces. Leonard joined the Chicago Police Dept. in 1960 and retired after serving for 25 years. He always said the most meaningful job he ever had as a policeman was as “Officer Friendly”. He visited Elementary School children in class teaching them safety on the street, citizenship, and building trust in policemen. He surely succeeded because people remembered him many years later. He was a kind pleasant person who could relate to children because he could become one of them so easily.
He is survived by his son Leonard J. Derkowski Jr, and daughter Deborah A. Wagner (Craig) of Delray Beach Florida. A sister Nancy Larson, of Bella Vista Arkansas, grandsons Joshua Derkowski of Watauga Texas and Anthony Ciullo of Baypoint California. He was the proud great-grandfather of Nikola Ciullo and Adeline Ciullo. Beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.
