Laurence “Larry” Berman, 68, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away peacefully April 22 at his home, surrounded by his devoted wife Marie, and several friends.
Larry was a Renaissance man whose talents ran from being a connoisseur of modern art to gourmet cooking. He was known for his generosity, kindness, willingness to help others, and loyalty. Above all, he was known for an uncanny ability to fix, repair or create anything mechanical.
With his photographic memory and his endless capacity for self-learning, he could be a part of any conversation, whether the subject was politics, engineering, history or artwork.
He was also a family man and the love of his life was his wife of 40 years, Marie, whom he met in high school and married in 1985. They made a life together first in Jackson Heights, Queens, then moved to Laurel Hollow on Long Island, where Larry built the house of his dreams, including a riding ring in the backyard for Marie, a horsewoman and a longtime executive with the designer Donna Karan.
Together, over the years, the two animal lovers took care of two horses, two ponies, a miniature horse and several beloved Afghans.
In December, 2022, after Larry retired, they moved to Florida, where Larry recreated and modernized another home for them in Boca Raton.
Besides Marie, he leaves behind his brother Robert, of New York, New York, his sister Jennifer, of Astoria, and an extended family. His father, Lawrence, and his mother, Jenny, predeceased him.
Larry was born on March 26, 1958 in Manhattan and grew up in Jackson Heights, the oldest of the family’s three children. He attended Bryant High School in Queens and Queensborough College. He was the co-owner of Manber trucking company, a family business he managed with his father and brother. Later, the brothers founded Capo Auction, an art and antique auction house, in Long Island City.
When he wasn’t working on his latest household project, he enjoyed the water, and was always tinkering with the engines of his own boat and his friends' crafts. He also loved cooking for his many friends, preparing everything from Chicken Scarpiello to Chinese food and Zeppoles, traveling with Marie and loving his Afghan, Jazzy.
Viewing will be from 11 am to 1 pm at the Glick Funeral Home, 3600 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton. A time of remembrance by the family will be held at 12:30 PM followed by interment at the Boca Raton Mausoleum.
