Julia Traveis Obituary

Beloved mother, grandmother “Mamo”, aunt, friend, child of God, recovery counselor and advocate for the homeless passed away at age 90 on July 19, 2021. She has been a highly respected resident of Boca Raton, Florida, for over fifty years

Liz had a lively childhood in the close-knit small town of Bay Minette, Alabama with older brother Claude Quinley and younger sister Yvonne Quinley Traveis, both who have predeceased her. She was an avid student and Glee Club member.

Liz and Yvonne met brothers and Navy men George and Leonard Traveis in Mobile, Alabama; Liz married George and Yvonne married Leonard in a double wedding ceremony December 27, 1954.  After the Navy, George was employed by IBM, which began a life of travel for the growing Traveis family. They lived in Alabama, Virginia and California among other places, and eventually settled in Boca Raton in 1969.

Liz, while a dedicated mother of seven, also had a career in insurance. Her efforts on behalf of the Haitian community garnered her a personal visit and thank-you from the president of Haiti. She also was a recovery sponsor for over four decades, and helped develop programs for the homeless through her long membership in the First United Methodist Church in Boca Raton. The ripples of her generous Christian spirit are so many and far-reaching as to be incalculable.

She is survived by son George (Monty) Traveis (spouse Hilary, children Stephanie, Christopher and Jenna), son Paul (Chris) Traveis (spouse Kathy, daughter Kelley), daughter Claudia Dilgen (spouse Jack, children Bailey and John), son Mark Traveis (spouse Michelle, son Andrew), daughter Rosemary Avery (spouse Scott, daughters Julia and Grace), daughter Julia Jones (spouse Bruce), daughter Judy Traveis (spouse Karin, son Gabe), nieces and nephews Bill Quinley, Susan Quinley Raines, Betsy Williams, Stephen Traveis, Lynn Godwin, and Mitchell Traveis. She is predeceased by daughter-in-law Karen Traveis, grandsons Michael Traveis and Luke Traveis, and nephew Tony Traveis.

A celebration of her life service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 28 at First United Methodist Church in Boca Raton.  The family has requested that everyone who attends the service please wear a mask.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Julia's name to Boca Helping Hands http://bocahelpinghands.org/ or Family Promise https://www.familypromisespbc.org/.
