Jorge Miguel Abarca, a retired bank executive and long-time resident of Delray Beach, FL passed away
on September 4, 2021.
Miguel was a devoted and caring father and husband, who loved his family unconditionally. He always
had words of encouragement, love and support for family and friends. His presence will be greatly
missed.
Miguel was born in Managua, Nicaragua on September 24, 1948 to Carlos Alberto Abarca Cubillo and
Bertha Cuadra Sotomayor. He obtained a degree in business administration and spent his career
developing software for financial institutions. In his first year in college, Miguel met his future wife,
Indiana. They married and had three children.
Miguel worked in Latin America, the US and Europe, where he did consulting work for the United Nations
in Geneva, Switzerland. He was a pioneer in software development in Latin America and his systems
are, to this day, still widely used in banking.
Miguel was a cultured reader with deep knowledge across a wide range of subjects – military
history, politics and philosophy, among others. He was a skilled chess player – he once tied with a
chess master - sudoku solver and an expert at developing codes that were impossible to crack. He was
also quick with a smile and was the master of dad jokes.
Miguel enjoyed playing tennis with friends on the weekends. He was happiest when traveling and being
in the outdoors, and also enjoyed hunting and shooting sports. He loved classical music, film and writing.
We will forever cherish the memories he left for us and will enjoy reading them to keep him close.
Miguel is survived by his wife, Indiana, and his children Miguel and his wife Christine, Ana Michelle and
her husband Donald and Carlos Daniel and his wife Brenda and niece Renata. He also leaves behind his
beloved siblings Bertha Leonor, Julia and Javier.
