John J. Donahue Jr, born in Philadelphia, PA on August 27 1941, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, FL at age 83. John, known to some as “Jack,” was devoted to his wife of 65 years, Barbara M. Donahue (LaGrossa), by whom he is survived. Their 70 years together are a testament to their profound, resilient, and enduring love. He was unwaveringly dedicated to his three beloved daughters – Carolyn Weingard, Gail DeFeo, and Susan Karch, and endeared by his three sons-in-law – Timothy Weingard, James DeFeo, and Paul J. Karch Sr. John’s six grandchildren – Stephen Donahue (Jennifer), Meghan Weingard, Matthew Weingard, Ryan DeFeo, Nicole DeFeo, and Paul Joseph Karch Jr and two great grandchildren, Amelia and Finn brought him endless joy and were a perpetual source of pride.
John loved his family and cherished his many dear friends. He welcomed all with an open heart and a steady, loving presence. He had the ability to engage in conversation with anyone (about anything) and a remarkable way of inspiring confidence and determination in others. John cherished Sunday dinners, enjoyed lively gatherings, and valued one-on-one talks. He always had a story to share but was also ready to listen. He was eager to help find a solution and willing to provide a hand. Those who knew him will always remember a man of quick and sharp wit, quiet strength, deep loyalty, and remarkable will.
John’s faith in God was steadfast. He attended St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach, FL, where he and Barbara made their home. Like many other parishioners, John’s presence at Sunday Mass was expected. When John and Barbara relocated their family from Philadelphia to North Wildwood, NJ, he became actively involved at St Ann’s Catholic Church (Notre Dame de la Mer). John was among the first enrollees at Father Judge High School and had many entertaining stories to tell about his time (and antics) there. John was the eldest son of John J. Donahue Sr. and Josephine E. Donahue (Hartnett) who baptized him at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Philadelphia. He is pre-deceased by his brother Thomas J. and sister Kathleen A.
John’s service in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) began in 1960. His academic achievements and strong aptitude and proficiency in mechanical and technical engineering earned him a job in Jet Engine/Aviation Mechanics and Engineering. His hard work and dedication enabled him to earn a competitive, performance-based promotion to Corporal E-4, a Marine Corps Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) rank. John was stationed in various domestic and international locations during his active service (e.g., Cherry Point, NC; Memphis, TN; Willow Grove, PA; Atsugi, Japan; Okinawa, Japan). As a Reservist he was assigned to the Marine Air Reserve Training Command (MARTC) in Illinois. He was formally recognized and honorably discharged.
John accepted an appointment to the City of Philadelphia Police Academy in October of 1964. During his six years of active service to the City, John was repeatedly recognized and honored, receiving numerous Official Commendations for Bravery, Heroism, and Merit. John never shied away from a challenge. He incurred a serious and disabling injury in 1971, while on duty and in pursuit of a suspect. As a result, John elected to retire early from the Force. This opened the door for John to become a successful entrepreneur.
in the early 1970s, John launched his own Construction business - first in New Jersey and then in South Florida. He developed skills and capabilities in all fields of the Construction industry (e.g., building, masonry, roofing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and across all stages (e.g., business development and sales, design / architectural drafting, estimating, contracting, procurement, project management). Many of his customers and professional associates became lifelong friends. To his immediate and extended family, he was the man who could fix anything.
After many years as a business owner, John retired from Construction but was quickly lured back into the industry. He was first asked to become a Building Inspector in Broward County, FL, then later became the Building Official for Deerfield Beach, FL. In the various roles he filled, John became known for fairness and his willingness to provide clear guidance and share knowledge that often streamlined the permitting and inspection processes.
John loved learning and enjoyed reading. He was a lifelong golfer, playing competitively in his youth, and bringing that same spirit to a friendly round. He was an outdoorsman and sportsman who enjoyed everything from surf fishing and swimming, to hunting, shooting, boating, scuba diving, and snow skiing. John also loved to travel and inspired a similar love in his family. In his later years, John became a frequent “Cruiser,” with Barbara by his side, and often surrounded by his family and close friends.
John’s family extends their sincerest and immeasurable gratitude for the overwhelming love, support, and comfort received during this sad time. To honor and celebrate his life and reflect the joy and laughter he brought to so many, the family kindly asks guests to wear bright, cheerful attire reminiscent of John and his vibrant spirit.
