Jerry Smith Workman, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 30, 2025 at Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach, FL. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Wheeler Workman. He was the proud father, grandfather and great grandfather of, and survived by 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren: daughter Lisa Workman (grandchildren Billy, Ivey & Crystal, &, great grandchildren Emerald & Tucker); son Jerry Workman (wife Cindy Schauer Workman, grandchildren Samantha & Tyler/Dani, great granddaughter Luna); daughter Sharon Workman Davis (husband Christopher Davis, grandchildren Sasha, Luke & Devon/Victor).
He was born on July 3, 1938 in Thomasville, NC to Mozelle Hill Workman and Dalton Workman. Jerry grew up with, and is also survived by his sisters Diane Workman Cole, Vickie Workman Patrum, and brother Billy Wayne Workman.
He proudly served his country as an Airman Second Class in the United States Air Force from January 1961 to January 1965.
Jerry was a man of few words, and a very big heart. At a very young age he bought his mother a house in their home town of Thomasville. Further details of his younger life are hard to come by, but there’s an urban legend that he once helped a young Elvis Presley when his car broke down in the backwoods of North Carolina. While in the Air Force he traveled the world, and once even ran with the bulls in the Azores. He was a hard-working, successful carpenter, roofer and painter, and briefly ran a small furniture business.
He played by his own rules and didn’t shy away from the occasional harmless mischief. He loved and regularly attended NASCAR races, often magically slipping through the ticket gate unnoticed. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and drinking beer, usually all 3 at once. But his greatest passion was his family. He made us all laugh with his incredible wit and his endearing smile and laughter. He will be greatly missed and live forever in our hearts.
Jerry will be cremated and there will be a celebration of his life at a later date.
