Jean L. Wendel, formally of DeWitt, passed away peacefully on Feb. 18 at the age of 96 in Boca Raton, Florida.
Jean was born on Oct. 28, 1929, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Paul and Verena Zutz. After graduating from high school, she moved to Scotts Bluff to work as a Lab Technician. She later moved to Clinton, and met Eugene Wendel. They were married in DeWitt, on May 3, 1958, and shared 52 years of marriage. They made their home in DeWitt until 1997, raising their family and building a life rooted in community and faith.
After retirement, Jean and Gene moved to Boca Raton, Florida where they enjoyed the warm winters and a slower pace of life together. She will be remembered for her kindness and her patience.
Jean was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her two daughters, Karen Schroeder of Broomfield, Colorado, and Ann (Steve) Merrell of Boca Raton.
She is survived by her daughters, her four grandchildren, Hallie (Bruce) Guo of Denver, Colorado, Jacob Schroeder of Westminster, Colorado, Austin (Lindsey) Merrell, Boca Raton, Chad Merrell of Columbia, South Carolina, one great-grandchild, McKenna Merrell, her brother, Richard Zutz and sister-in-law, Joanne, of Norfolk, Nebraska and many nieces and nephews.
She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of a second great-grandchild, who she already held close in her heart.
In addition to her husband, Eugene, she was preceded in death by her parents.
A prayer service will be held on March 14 in Boca Raton at the Glick Family Funeral Home. Jean will be laid to rest in DeWitt, alongside Gene. Services in Iowa will be announced at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Grace Lutheran Church Camp in DeWitt. We are grateful for the wonderful care and compassion given to Jean by the nursing staff at Elite Manor ALF in Boca Raton during her stay over the last few years.
