Jim Plack, eldest of four children, son of Margaret Ann (Peggy) Bathe and George Theodore Plack, was born in St Louis County, Missouri, in 1950. Jim grew up in a small house in St. Ann, served as an altar boy, attended boy’s schools, and began a lifelong advocacy for civil rights and just political causes.
Jim received an undergraduate degree in political science from St Louis University, and his law degree from Washington University School of Law. A 50-year-member of the Missouri Bar Association and a member of the Florida Bar, Jim worked in residential mortgage lending for Bank of America, Citicorp, and JP Morgan Chase.
Jim’s thoughts, words, and actions, reflected his desire to be a good person. He found great joy in nurturing and sustaining the bonds he had with the people he cared for and loved. His goodness was plain and evident; his interest in people and their lives genuine. Jim’s unmistakable generosity of spirit and goodwill testify to his life well-lived.
A handsome man without conceit, Jim had an eye for detail that showed in an unstudied personal and business style, and in unerring judgment in landscaping, gardening, remodeling and home design. Friends enjoyed Jim for his easy laugh, easy friendship, and good, smart advice.
Many simple pleasures touched Jim in his life: creating a home with beloved husband, Scott; walking the stubborn bull terriers, Emmett and Allie; Smokey the cat, friend and companion during Jim’s early career years; orchids and orchid shows; the Cardinals and spring training; biking in parks and along nature trails; meeting friends in Provincetown; being a devoted big brother to sisters Rebecca, Diane, and Laura, and loving uncle and great-uncle to nephews and nieces; warm climates, shorts, backyard grilling; schmoozing with neighbors; Ted Drewes custard; collecting magnets, tree ornaments, coffee mugs, cat figurines, cigar boxes; searching for perfect gifts and cards; Harry Potter movies; remembering birthdays, and celebrating holidays.
For years, Jim was an active member of Dignity, a group that speaks for love and acceptance in church policy. Jim was a supporter of Lambda Legal and the ASPCA.
Jim’s life touched many people, including longtime friends Carol, Regina, Rob S., Ken, Dan, Jimmy, John, Mary Beth, Glenn, Bill, Peggy, Steve, and Rob.
Our tears speak to the sadness of losing our dear friend. He will be missed and fondly remembered. May you rest in peace, sweet prince.
