Jack Pester Obituary

Jack Edward Pester, 80 years old, passed away on the morning of April 18, 2024. He was in hospice care and with his family, at home in Boca Raton, Florida. Jack was originally from Elizabeth and Ortley Beach, New Jersey and was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Mildred Pester of Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, daughters Kathleen Pester of Tallahassee, Fl and Kelly (Eric) Damerow of Palm Bay, Fl, granddaughter Molly Damerow and cousins Harry (Frances)Pester of Seminole, Fl and Carol Bernard of Ocean Grove, New Jersey. He was also close to his brothers-in-law Rory McRory of McMurray, Pennsylvania, Tom (Leanne) McRory of Cecil, Pennsylvania and Francis (Jennifer) McRory of Canton, Georgia.

Jack was a forty-five-year member of the Boca Raton American Legion Post #277 and a life member of the ELKS. Having been active in the Civil Air Patrol during high school years, Jack decided to enlist in the Air Force in 1962. He served as a proud member of TAC (Tactical Air Command) and worked on F-100 Super Sabre Jets. Almost forty years later, he discovered that the jet he had been crew chief on, had been “put out to pasture” at a base in Georgia. He recognized it by the tail number. A family trip was in order and an excited vet was reunited with his “old bird” at Warner-Robins Air Force Base. The aircraft was later refurbished and now is on display at an Air Museum.

Jack loved riding horseback, driving boats and cooking. While stationed at Luke AFB in Arizona, he spent many hours riding in the desert, working at the base stables or riding in local rodeos. His standard joke was that his best event was “getting up and getting into the ambulance”.  He loved his two horses “Butch” and “Duke”.

After his military service, Jack returned to New Jersey and became an Industrial Radiographer. After a few years, he left for Florida to pursue his dream of becoming a licensed boat captain. He worked with the Helen S Drift Fishing Fleet in Pompano Beach and in the Bahamas. He also ran various charter and commercial boats attaining a 100-ton ocean operator’s license. Jack met his kindred spirit, Beverly, in 1974 and they married the following year. Four years afterwards, they opened a small restaurant in downtown Boca Raton called “Hungry Jacks” which became quite a popular place for locals and occasional celebrities. In later years Jack worked for Kraeer Funeral Homes and became Director of Transportation for Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton.  He enjoyed golfing, fixing things on boats or around the house, being a father and taking family driving vacations.

Jack was known for his quick Irish wit and humor was crucial to his personality. He could tell a good story or joke, was great at trivia and took much pride in his work and family. He enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and family on Facebook. He was wise and had a strong sense of duty and honor. He would tell you, if asked, that his most cherished job and role in life was that of dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A private “Celebration of Life” for friends and family is to be held on June 30th.
