George was born in Sparta, Greece on September 22, 1935 to James and Stavroula Courakos.  He had seven siblings; Georgia, Pipitsia, Emmanuel, Mary, Katina, Diane, and Peter.

As soon as World War 2 ended, they left Greece and settled in New York City.  George attended school in Brooklyn and enlisted in the Army in 1955 where he proudly served in the 82nd Airborne.  While finishing up his tour, he met the woman who he would spend most of his life with, Kaliope Psihas.  They were married on November 3, 1957.
