F. George Herring, age 96, of Boca Raton Florida, passed away on October 28, 2023.
George was born on November 13, 1926 to Roland Herring and Catherine Marie Franz, in Philadelphia PA.
He completed High School in Concord, New Hampshire. Aided by the Naval ROTC program, he enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, majoring in Electrical Engineering.
George entered active service in the United States Navy in November 1944, at the age of 17. Assigned to Naval Intelligence, he was involved in the early development of emerging radar technology.
Upon his discharge from service in 1946 George resumed his engineering studies at University of New Hampshire, graduating with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. He continued his studies at the University of Kansas, and completed his Masters studies in Electrical Engineering. He also earned an ENGINEER’S DEGREE from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. (Now NYU Tandon School of Engineering)
Professionally, George was accomplished, working in the defense industry, where he designed and supervised research and development of electronic defense systems. He holds several patents for design work in his field.
George married his first wife, Helen Gumm, on Long Island N.Y. in 1950, and raised six children. Helen passed in 1991 after a seven year battle with cancer.
He and his second wife Julianna led an active life in retirement in New York and in Boca Raton, traveled extensively and labored in support of the Boca Raton Navy League, and of their many children and grandchildren.
Passed, from this life, surrounded by his wife Julianna, and their sons and daughters. Those who were not present were there in spirit.
He is survived by his wife Julianna, and their children, step children and spouses:
Robert J. Herring (Theresa), F. George Herring Jr. (Patricia), James Herring (Margaret), Thomas Herring (Mary Ellen), Katherine Smyth (Fred), and the memory of Holly Herring.

He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
An avid electrical engineer, beachgoer, swimmer, water skier, motorcyclist, aviator, hiker, and traveler; he remained active into his 90s.
He will be missed for his thoughtful observations and insight, his humor, and his example as a relentless seeker of knowledge.
