Francisco Alcides Rey IV, known affectionately as Frank, passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 74, in Delray Beach, Florida. Born on January 12, 1950, in Philadelphia, PA, Frank spent his formative years there before making South Florida his home.
Frank was a charismatic individual whose life was as vibrant and engaging as his conversations. Known as Umpire or Coach Frank, he dedicated many years to training young athletes in baseball and softball throughout South Florida. His passion for storytelling was evident through his captivating tales about life and family history. Frank took immense pride in his Cuban heritage, which he enthusiastically shared with his grandchildren.
His interests were diverse, ranging from dancing—which earned him several trophies in the 1970s—to automobile racing, where he notably became a New Jersey State Champion. Frank's love for cars extended beyond the track; he enjoyed teaching driving to his children, grandchildren, and neighbors. An avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, he cherished watching games with his son and family members. Frank's hobbies also included collecting model cars, baseball cards, hats, swimming with family, and caring for his dog, activities that kept him active in his community.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara Rey Shire; children, Francisco (Lauren), Amanda Rey Johnson (Dwayne), and William (Suzy); grandchildren, Ariana Rey, Livia Rey, Mya Rey-Anderson, Adeline Johnson, Trey Johnson, Asa Johnson, William Jr,; siblings, Georgina (Shaheed), Frances (Peter), Max (Marlene), Robert (Ellen), and Richard (Alane). He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco Rey (Aida Quinones) and Concetta Squillace, and his sister, Gloria Rey Rodriguez (Ulpiano).
Friends and family are invited to honor Frank's memory through contributions to the A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation or the Tri-County Humane Society of Boca Raton, causes close to his heart.
The Glick Family Funeral Home in Boca Raton, FL, is assisting the family during this time. Frank’s life and legacy will be remembered for his profound impact on his community and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed.
