Eugene Slyman Obituary

Fort Lauderdale, FL — Eugene Daniel Slyman, 98, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on June 9th, 2026. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on May 9th, 1928, Eugene spent the early chapters of his life surrounded by his loving parents and eight brothers and sisters. He made a name for himself as a star football player in school until he was sidelined by an injury and decided to join the Navy and serve his country, which he did proudly for four years. He often said his most favorite moments were spent sitting on the aft deck of the destroyer watching the screws turn, sipping coffee and smoking a cigarette. Having earned his GI bill benefits, Eugene spent his next four years earning his degree at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.

Eugene began working for the federal government in Washington DC where he worked his way up to the position of Inspector General for the FAA. Along the way he was instrumental in creating the DCAA, Defense Contract Audit Agency, and awarded the U.S, Department of Transportation Secretary’s Award for Meritorious Achievement by Elizabeth Dole.

During this time, he married Jeanne Rahal, and had three children. He was re-married in 1974 to Jeanne “Jay” George with whom he then spent 42 wonderful years. Many working weekends found him playing the Oud and singing with his band across the country. His other favorite pastime was golfing and he had membership in two separate Golf Clubs, Norbeck Country Club in Montgomery County, Md., and Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale. It was at Coral Ridge that he won trophies for shooting his age and in 2019 was the CRCC Legend Golfer Of The Year.

In 2015 Eugene and Jay left their Maryland life for the permanent sunshine of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he continued honing his golf game at Coral Ridge Country Club. It is here that he happily spent the last years of his life creating beautiful memories with his family.

Eugene is survived by his younger, 90 year old brother, Dennis John Slyman, and his three children, Dana Louise Rados, Laura Ann Vogtman and Eugene Elias Slyman and his eight grandchildren.

Eugene will be laid to rest in the Boca Raton Mausoleum with his beloved late wife Jeanne “Jay” George Slyman in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
