David W. Dunn, Sr. Boca Raton Fl/Lake Hopatcong NJ Husband,Father, Grandfather, Navy Veteran, Retired Police Officer. September 15, 1942-July 20, 2021

 

David Walter Dunn, Sr.,78 of Boca Raton Florida and Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton after a short illness.

 

He was born in Hackensack, NJ, the son of Walter F. Dunn and Louise C. (Sullivan),and grew up in the towns of River Edge and Demarest, New Jersey. He graduated from Northern Valley High School in 1960. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University for a semester before he made the decision to join the United States Navy. He was in the Navy for 6 years and served time on the Submarine USS Tusk (SS-46) and the Destroyer USS Hazelwood (DD-531). He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal For Service during The Cuban Missile Crisis. When he was on a weekend pass, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Amy Balch, whom he married in 1963.They proudly celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary on July 13th of this year.

 

After David was discharged from the Navy, he and Marjorie moved to the Oak Ridge section of Jefferson Township where he managed the Oak Ridge Lake Swim Club and started his own business D&M trucking. While managing Oak Ridge Lake and his trucking business, he decided to join the Jefferson Township Police Department as a special officer, and discovered his true passion of being a cop. After one year as a special officer, he joined the Jefferson Township Police department full time, and proudly served as a Detective and Juvenile Officer until his retirement. He had mentioned that serving as a police officer was the most rewarding job of his life. He was civic minded and was a member of Kiwanis,The Knights of Columbus, and The American Legion. After retiring from the police force, he went back to college and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science at Ramapo College. In addition, he had his Real Estate license, and built homes with his company Pioneer Modular Homes in the Northern NJ area until retiring in 1998. In 2000, Marjorie and David became dual residents of New Jersey and South Florida. They moved from the Oak Ridge side of Jefferson Township to Lake Hopatcong where he thoroughly enjoyed living on the lake. He had fond memories of spending summers on Greenwood Lake as a child, and was happy to share his love of lakefront living with his family and friends.

 

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, daughters Patricia Dunn and her fiance Miguel Reyes, Janet Dobbs and her husband Scott, son David W. Dunn, Jr. and his wife Dale, his grandchildren Jonathan and Stephanie Dobbs, Lindsay and Christopher Dunn. He is also survived by close members of his extended family and friends who he considered family.

 

A Memorial Gathering will be held Friday, July 23rd be from 12:00 pm-1pm with a Memorial Service beginning at 1pm at Glick Family Funeral Home, Boca Raton, Florida. An additional Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
