Craig Johnson Obituary

With profound sorrow and eternal love, we announce the passing of Craig Samuel, a brilliant, creative and loving soul who saw the world through a lens uniquely his own.

Craig was born on April 15, 1977, and grew up in Randolph before moving to Landing, where his deep love for the outdoors first took root. Camping trips with his mom, dad, and brother ignited his passion for nature, a passion that would shape much of his life.

Before starting college, Craig embarked on two cross-country adventures with close friends, returning home brimming with stories of his travels, each one a testament to his adventurous spirit. After these expeditions, Craig decided to channel his creativity into a formal education and applied to the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. Overjoyed at his acceptance, he graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in Photography.

After four formative years in the bustling streets of New York City, Craig felt the call of the open road once more. He joined Outward Bound as a counselor for at-risk youth, guiding others while reconnecting with the wilderness he so cherished. Seeking an even deeper connection to the natural world, he spent time at Turtle Island in North Carolina, living off the land without electricity or running water, plowing fields with horses, and embracing the simplicity of life. It was there that he met Janet and her children, forming a bond of love and connection that, while not lasting forever, remained deeply meaningful.

Craig’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable. He returned to school to earn an Associate Degree in Radiography and had recently begun pursuing a certification in CT. Despite these academic achievements, his heart always remained tethered to the outdoors. Riding his two motorcycles provided him with an escape from the everyday and a way to reconnect with the freedom he valued.

Craig was endlessly bright and creative, using art and writing as his compass to navigate the world. His paintings in recent years became his greatest outlet, a way to pour his soul onto the canvas. In the same way as Don McLean's song "Vincent" states, "the world was never meant for one as beautiful as you (Craig)".

Craig’s passions extended beyond art to skateboarding, where he forged lifelong friendships, and snowboarding, which brought him joy during the winter months. His creativity, kindness, and ability to see beauty in the world touched everyone he met.

Craig is survived by his mother, Susan McLennan; his brother, Erik; his aunt and uncle, Heather and Mike Maddaloni; his cousins, Christopher and Nicholas Maddaloni; his niece, Mikayla Johnson; his nephew, Dakota Johnson, and Dakota’s partner Bri and their newborn daughter, Adyson Christine. He was preceded in death by his father, John Johnson; his maternal grandparents, Patricia and Samuel McLennan; his uncle, Skip McLennan; and his paternal grandparents, Helen and Sigurd Johnson.

Craig is also survived by a circle of dear friends that he loved deeply, who will carry his memory in their hearts.

A celebration of Craig’s life will be held on February 2, 2025 at 12:00 noon at Glick Funeral Home, 3600 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL, where family and friends will gather to share stories, honor his spirit, and remember the beauty he brought to the world.
