Charles BENNETT Connelly, age 75 of Annandale, VA and Delray Beach, Fl, passed on January 25, 2025, surrounded by his sons, Chuck and John, his brother, Bob, and Mark Laubach, his loving life partner of twenty-eight years. He was a loving father, grandfather and brother.
Throughout his career Bennett maintained a reputation for service to each community he has lived in. In high school he worked in a nursing home during spring break and summer for four years. In Maryland he was director of the Department of Children, Youth and Families in Montgomery County for over 20 years, then director of the Department of Human Services of St. Mary's County. With a keen interest in both youth and older adults, he created an intergenerational center that matched seniors with high school students, mixing social activities with learning.
When he retired (for the third time) to Lewes, DE he worked with the Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches collaborated to serve people in need, and he helped to initiate the outreach program that was the forerunner to the Community Resource Center and Food Basket in Rehoboth Beach.
In 2017 as a volunteer, Bennett worked with the Village Board to develop a strategic plan for its future mission to serve senior adults in Lewes, Rehoboth and Milton, DE. That effort included supporting leaders of the then fledgling South Coastal Village Volunteers serving communities to the southeastern Sussex County region.
When Bennett and Mark moved to Valencia Falls, Bennett immediately became active in their new community. He chaired committees that enhanced the lifestyle of the entire development. He spearheaded a neighbor-to-neighbor program during Covid that added to the feeling of wellbeing and community during this difficult time.
Many know Bennett as a funny, upbeat positive hard-working soul. He has always been thought of as a loyal friend to all he met. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 22 at Glick Family Funeral Home in Boca Raton.
