Berta Castro Obituary

BERTA LILIA (NEE DIAZ) CASTRO entered into eternal life on December 2, 2024 at her home with her loving family by her side.

Born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Berta was the daughter of the late Herminio and Apolonia (nee Garcia) Diaz. She lived in Cuba until the age of 38 when she immigrated to the United States of
America with her husband and two young children. She resided in Tampa, Florida, and subsequently lived in Boca Raton and Delray Beach, Florida.

Berta was a consummate educator. She taught kindergarten through middle school in rural Cuba for many years, sometimes having to travel to one-room schoolhouses on horseback.  She especially loved educating children of poor means and helping them achieve a better life through excellent education. Her incredible work ethic continues to inspire and elevate her entire family.

After marrying her life-long love, Pedro Castro, they resided in Habana, Cuba, where she helped him build a small family business while still traveling to teach. She was a selfless loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt always sacrificing for her family’s needs. Her masterful storytelling, extraordinary Cuban cooking, and gentle patient love will always be remembered and deeply missed.

Upon immigrating to the United States of America, she worked selflessly with her husband to build a business and help all her family who immigrated after her. She deeply loved America and was grateful to her for giving the family refuge from a cruel dictatorship. She became a US citizen in April of 1980 and proudly voted in every subsequent presidential election. Berta told all her grandchildren to vote as well!

Berta is preceded in death by her two dear brothers, Raul and Armando, and sisters Hilda and Gloria. She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 69 years, Pedro Castro, whom she wed on June 18, 1955; a dear brother, Sergio Diaz of Habana, Cuba, a loved brother and sister in law, Servando and Olga Castro; a cherished son, Pedro and daughter in love Esther, a beloved daughter, Teresita and son in love Richard Greene, and the “treasures of her heart” as she would refer to them - her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Mandy & Todd, Daniel & Stephanie, Peter & Lindsay, Ricky & Rachel, Natalie & Brian, and respective children Gabby, William, Cooper, Pierson, Kendall, Maddie, Dante, Dawson, Jaxson, Hayden, Dakota. Her 12th great grandson is expected in just a few months. She is survived by many loved nephews and nieces as well.

Berta deeply loved her God and faithfully believed in His promises of redemption and eternal life. Though she will be greatly missed, we rejoice in knowing that she is more alive than ever before, pain-free and with her Savior.  “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”- Psalm 116:15

A service will be held on Wednesday December 4, 2024 at Glick Funeral Home 3600 N Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33431.

hermana, esposa, madre, abuela, bisabuela y tía desinteresada y amorosa, siempre
A Berta
Greene, y los "tesoros de su corazón", como ella se referiría a ellos: sus nietos y bisnietos;
Mandy y Todd, Daniel y Stephanie, Peter y Lindsay, Ricky y Rachel, Natalie y Brian, y sus
respectivos hijos Gabby, William, Cooper, Pierson, Kendall, Maddie, Dante, Dawson,
Jaxson, Hayden, Dakota.
- Salmo 116:
