Argyrios Spanos, aged 76 passed away on May 8, 2024 after a long and valiant fight. He was born on September 7, 1947 in Athens, Greece to Theodoros and Melpomeni Spanos. He served in the Hellenic Air Force for four years as a medic. After his honorable discharge, he joined his family in New York in 1972. There he met his loving wife Effie and they would spend the next 53 years together.
Argyrios believed that the most valuable thing in this world was education and believed in the constant pursuit of knowledge. He lead by example in every way possible. He was a graduate of Queens College and New York University with a graduate degree in Organic Chemistry. However, his thirst for knowledge went beyond degrees, whether it was reading the Encyclopedia Britannica for fun, learning about Korean culture or it was continuing learning French and German via YouTube in a hospital bed, he was never satisfied with what he already knew. Argyrios was a true scientist not only by profession but by heart and soul. No question was ever left unanswered and no one answer was ever good enough.
As much of a perpetual student he was, he was also a selfless teacher and mentor for his children and their friends. Endless questions were always met with answers ranging from space exploration, politics, history and art to what do things look like under a microscope and why are neon signs the way they are. It is no wonder his children would continue his legacy and become scientists.
He, along with his wife were the moral compass for their children. Teaching how to love not only as a family but how to love and appreciate humanity and all it had to offer. He enjoyed watching space shuttle launches, building model rockets and fishing with his son Theo and would bond over philosophy, science and starting revolutions over late night ice cream with his daughter Georgia. He would fill the house with classical music and loved to sketch, paint and write. He was a fantastic cook but was a terrible singer.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Ioanna, and is survived by his loving wife Effie and children Theodoros and Georgia, son-in-law Eric, as well as his brother Nikolaos, sister-in- law Christina, his niece Sandy, and extended family in Greece and scattered around the globe.
He will be remembered for his brilliance, intellect, love of science, and perseverance. He was a warm, generous, and kind man who cared deeply for humanity. He had a sharp wit and a heart made of gold. Above all, he will be remembered as a loving husband and the best father. May his next journey be filled with as much love and light as he brought to this one.
A visitation will be held from 10:30-11 AM on Wednesday, May 15 at St. Mark Greek Orthodox Church in Boca Raton where a Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will be announced at a later date.
