Alberto “Al” Delgado, a talented Latin Jazz musician and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025. Born in New York City, Alberto lived a life filled with music, service, and love for his family.
A proud veteran, Alberto served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Beyond his service, his true passion was music. He was a self-taught musician, picking up his first instrument, a set of bongos, at just five years old. His talent and dedication led him to perform alongside legends such as Tito Puente and Joe Cuba before branching out to compose his own Latin Jazz music, with the vibraphone as his instrument of choice.
Alberto shared his love of music as a professor at the University of Maine Augusta, where he inspired countless students. He also performed at jazz festivals throughout Maine, captivating audiences with his unique fusion of smooth jazz and salsa rhythms. His artistry and passion left an enduring impact on those who heard him play.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 41 years, Mary L. Zapata-Delgado; his parents, Teófilo Delgado and Susana Martinez; his siblings, Gladys Forestier, Teófilo Delgado, and Ursula Quintana; and his son, Jorge L. Torres.
Alberto is survived by his brother, Henry Delgado; his daughters, Vevette Cundari, Susan Delgado, and Michelle Delgado-Lumpkin; his son-in-law, Rey Lumpkin; and his daughter-in-law, Katrina Torres. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Mathew Torres, Jada Heilig, Jorge “Jorgie” Alberto Torres, and Jayden Torres, along with a nephew, great-nephews, nieces and great-nieces.
Alberto Delgado’s legacy lives on through his music and the love he shared with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
A private, memorial service will be held by the family followed by a celebration of life service at a later date.
