William Hall Obituary

William Carder Hall died peacefully at the age of 85 on May 14, 2018 surrounded by his loving family in Boca Raton, FL.

William (Bill) was born April 28, 1933 in Chicago, IL.

Bill is survived by his loving and caring wife, Helen Jo Hall, and his six daughters, Pat Cowdery, Cathy Linton, Nancy Hall, Janet Pilgrim, Beth Hall and Eileen Petersen from his first marriage to Lucy Somerville Hall.  Bill is also survived by his sons-in-law Jim Cowdery, Paul Linton, John Pilgrim, and Karl Petersen; his grandchildren, Stephen Cowdery, Eileen Cowdery, John Linton, Grace Pilgrim, Evan Pilgrim, Craig Petersen, Jack Petersen and Bridget Petersen; and his step-daughters Stacy Sale and Kristen Highton; step-son Bill Sale; and step-grandchildren Conner Sale, Claire Highton and Lynn Highton.  Bill was predeceased by his parents Carder Hall and Hazel Hall, and his brother Sam Houston.

Bill graduated from South Shore High School in 1951 and was an Eagle Scout.  Bill served three years of Active Duty in the Army during the Korean War as a cryptographer stationed at Far East Command, Japan earning the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal.  Bill grew a successful career as Director of General Merchandise for Kroger Company. Bill’s merchandising expertise led to positions in publishing circulation as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Time Distribution Services – Time Warner during the launch of People magazine; Executive Vice President of the National Enquirer; Vice President, Marketing Director Magazine Division of CBS Inc. Bill was Editor In Chief and Publisher of PubFax, a trade publication for the periodical publishing industry.  In 1988 Bill married Jo Hall and semi-retired in DeLand, FL staying active as a consultant for the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, and the Museum of Florida Art.   Bill is best known in DeLand for the column, Veritas, that he wrote for the West Volusia Beacon from 1996 to 2016.  He was active in his church, founded Interfaith Caregivers, served as Chair of the Government Affairs Committee and on the Board of the DeLand Chamber of Commerce, and ran for a DeLand City Commission seat as well as the West Volusia Hospital Authority.  Bill enjoyed time with family, history, reading, writing and travel.  Bill was dearly loved and his wisdom, sense of humor, and pursuit of truth will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm on Monday, May 21 at the Glick Family Funeral Home in Boca Raton where a Funeral Service will begin at 12:30 pm.  A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:15 PM on Monday, May 21 at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 23 at The First Presbyterian Church in DeLand, FL.
