Steven Wright Obituary

Steven Mark Wright is a legend in our minds and he has left a powerful impression with the life he led. We are all truly blessed to have been a part of the beautiful story that was Steve’s life. His love for God, family, friends, the water, and his passion and dedication to the game of golf was evident to all who knew him.

Steve came into this life on January 19th, 1957 in Alpena, Michigan. His mother Mae Wright raised five children, Karen (deceased ), Gil (deceased ), Jim, Steve, and Nancy. He attended Lake Brantley High School and studied Business at Rollins College. Steve was a part of the surfing community in New Smyrna Beach in the 1970s as both surfer and surf photographer. His first step into the golf industry came at Sugar Mill Country Club as an Assistant Superintendent. Since then, he has dedicated himself to a diverse, successful 30+ year career in golf. He served as Superintendent at Rockledge Country Club and Director of Golf Course Management at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, FL, Golf Course Superintendent at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood, FL, Long Cove Club, on Hilton Head Island, SC, Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, FL, and most recently at Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, FL. Steve was a member of Golf Course Superintendent Association of America since 1984 and member of United States Golf Association for 20 years. Steve contributed countless hours serving as the Lowcountry GCSA President 1996-1999, Carolinas GCSA President 2001 - 2002, Palm Beach GCSA President 2013-2014, and Florida GCSA for which he was currently serving as 2018 Vice-President. He was a leader in the turf management world and was passionate about continued education and mentorship for the future of the industry.

At 21 years old, Steve met his soulmate Sheree Popham Wright, and they spent the next forty years laughing with, learning from, and loving on each other. Anyone who knows Steve and Sheree understands their deep respect and passion for one another. They spent every possible moment they could together - from traveling the country to daily rides to get coffee and check the waves at the beach - they knew what they had and cherished every moment. They grew together in this life and formed a love that is admired by many and attained by few. They raised three wonderful children together, oldest daughter, Casey, son Pierce, and youngest daughter Bayley,  whom Steve was proud of and never missed an opportunity to brag about. They learned from their father how to be dedicated and passionate people, work hard, love harder, and sprinkle sarcasm into all situations - something Steve was undoubtedly a pro at. For many of us, he molded our hearts, our careers, our lives.

Donald Ross once wrote “my work will tell my story” and we think this is how Steve would hope to be remembered. Except where Ross may have been speaking to his work as a golf course designer, we know Steve would be referring not only to his work in golf, but also his hard work done daily in loving: loving life and loving family.
