I just found out today that Lester has passed. I am so so sorry to hear this. He was a great man. He and I had so many discussions over the years and have enjoyed a long friendship with great mutual respect and admiration. Our condolences to his family from my family.

Les was one of my friends who I have not seen since New Orleans, early 1960's and once or twice in New York. But he was important in my life for the time together. Every so often I would think about Les and finally, a few years ago, I googled and located him, and we spoke on the phone. I am planning to go to Florida and again googled him to discover his death. I am sad not to have the chance to renew that earlier friendship.

I am deeply saddened by the news that Lester Embree passed away last month. Lester was a good friend and a great supporter of our publishing program. He was the driving force for the set up of the Encyclopedia of Phenomenology, the series Contributions to Phenomenology and many other projects. We spent many happy times at his house in Florida, my home in the Netherlands and at numerous conferences and other travels. His kind and warm personality is sorely missed.

Lester Embree is a great friend of phenomenological philosophers in East-Asia. I met him for the first time in April 1996 in the first international conference on phenomenology organized at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Yet his name entered my mind almost 20 years earlier as the editor and English translator of the French phenomenological philosopher Paul Ricoeur's book "Husserl: An Analysis of his Phenomenology". Friendship between us was built up immediately since our first meeting in Hong Kong. During the next twenty years we met regularly in international conferences in different parts of the world, such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Florida, Prague, Lima, Tokyo, Seoul, Kaohsiung, Segovia, etc. During a conference organized by Lester in May 2002 in Florida, he helped to initiate the regional research net-work "P.E.A.CE"--Phenomenology for East-Asian CirclE--as a response to the global rise of violence after 911 and to promote intercultural understanding through phenomenological philosophy against xenophobia. Lester Embree will be remembered by East-Asian phenomenologists.

Querido Colega:

me ensuma no seu seo.
Pro sei que agromarei
en folla verde e tenra
aló na Primavera.
E agardo ilusionado que
o Outono me murche para ser
terra de novo, unha vez máis.

I knew this man in Segovia 2011. There, a few minutes of conversation with him were enough to receive his dedicated dictionary and a warmed vibrations towards phenomenology. Thanks forever.

My deepest condolences to the Embree family on the passing of Lester. Lester was an extraordinarily generous human being, who dedicated his life to promoting phenomenology and its practice, and preserving the memory and tradition of New School philosophy which he knew at first hand. He was always encouraging and his larger-than-life presence at conferences internationally will be missed. The Embree family can be very proud of his achievements and especially his efforts to bring together philosophers from all over the world in the practice of phenomenology. May he rest in peace.

I first met Lester at the inaugural meeting of the Merleau-Ponty Circle in 1976. A bunch of us were in a dorm lounge in the evening and Lester cheerfully remarked something to the effect that if a bomb were to hit the building at that moment, the future of American phenomenology would be changed ... he always had a keen sense for the historical context of the work he was contributing to! I bring up this memory because at this sad time, I want to remember his sense of humor as well as his accomplishments. And of course those of us in the phenomenological tradition will be continuing to carry on this work.

My sympathy to Lester's family. Lester was my colleague since I joined the Philosophy department 25 years ago. He was a supportive, friendly, and witty presence with an interesting twist of mind. He showed me kindness and encouragement, for which I remain grateful. As his children, you should be proud of the example he set for other scholars. I am so sorry for your loss.
