Jack Wells Sr. Obituary

Jack Goebel Wells, Sr., Husband, Father, Grand Father, Mentor, Air Force Colonel, Professor and Florida Gator,

passed away peacefully on 2/27/18 after battling Alzheimer’s for the past 6 years.

Born February 21, 1929 to Otis and Katherine Wells in Winterhaven, Fl.

He grew up in Ft. Myers, Fl. where he attended Ft. Myers High school, and he met the love of his life Barbara Barton.  He holds numerous records and won many awards in Football, Basketball and Track & Field. As a tight end in his senior year, his single season receiving yardage total was not surpassed for 54 years! He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.  He graduated in 1947, thus ending 12 years of perfect attendance!

He attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship and was a tight end for the Gators football team. He received his Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision.  After a few years, they moved to Lake Wales where he was a Jr. High school principal, where Jack stated were some of his happiest years. He later attended University of Southern Mississippi where he received his doctorate.

He was in ROTC and served in the U.S. Air Force and was Honorably discharged as a Full Bird Colonel and continued serving in the Air Force Reserves, totaling over 30 years of service to our country.

In between college graduation and joining the Air Force, he married Barbara in July 1951. After 67 years they were still very much in love and were inseparable. They lived in Germany during his active duty, returned to the US and lived in Winterhaven where he was a Mathematics teacher and coach.

In 1964, they moved to Boca Raton, Fl. where Jack was one of the Founding Professors at FAU, teaching School Administrative Law until he retired in 1991. He mentored countless people and future leaders in the South Florida Community.

He always said life was all about POSITIVE ATTITUDE. He loved to say: ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’, ‘No one is perfect…there’s no such thing as perfect’.  He will be greatly missed by all whose paths he crossed, by the very many lives he touched.

He is predeceased by his sister Margaret Wells(Mulford) and his brother Pete Wells.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara(Barton) Wells, Boca Raton, His sons Jack G., Jr. & Pat (Byers) Wells, of Oakland Park, David Wells of Cape Coral and Doug & Donna (Grispino) Wells of Boca Raton, Grandson Ryan Wells, and Brother Richard Wells.
