Dorothy L. Backes

Dorothy L. Backes, 86, of Boca Raton passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

Born Dorothy Lane Delaney on June 30, 1931, married Raymond H. Backes and lived in Wallingford, CT before being transplanted to Boca Raton, FL in 1962.  After Ray retired from Pratt & Whitney they pooled their talents and became a successful HUSBAND AND WIFE ART TEAM:  Ray primarily as a watercolorist of marine life and etching of historical note, while Dorothy focused on green and brown etchings depicting nature, foremost her fondness for sea oats.  After Ray passed in 1988 Dorothy lost much of her enthusiasm for the art circuit.

As a long-time parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, she assisted the handicapped in their annual spirituals retreats.  Dorothy knitted for Birthline, a subsidiary of Catholic Charities whose job it was to support unwed mothers and their babies up to the babies third birthday.  Dorothy also used recycled high-end designer clothes to fashion bears and bunnies for our migrant worker’s children.

Predeceased by husband Raymond H., son John Forest, remaining Raymond Michael, Deborah Ann, and Maryanne Lane.

A life well lived Dorothy’s unconventional humor, irish wit and those sparkling blue eyes will be sorely missed.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am at St. Joan of Arc Church on Thursday, January 18, 2018 with interment to follow at Boca Raton Cemetery.
