Christine E. (Shady) Howell, 92, of Boca Raton passed away on May 4, 2018 at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Born in Queens, New York on December 29, 1925, Chris was the only child of Christina and Frank J. Kern.
Chris grew up in Queens and attended Barnard College in New York City. In 1946, she met James L. Shady, Jr., who had served as a US Army Major during World War II. He swept her off her feet and they married in April 1947. Chris and Jim settled in Huntington, New York, and were married for 26 years when Jim passed away in 1974. Chris enjoyed a 25-year career as a copy editor with Educational Developmental Laboratories, Inc.
In 1990, Chris retired to Boca Raton to be near her family. She was a valued volunteer at the Boca Raton Historical Society Gift Shop for many years. However, her most important job in retirement was as a loving daughter, niece, mother and grandmother.
Chris is survived by her daughter Susan Shady Saxton of Boca Raton and grandson James Kern (Jennifer) Saxton of Los Angeles, CA.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 2 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Boca Raton. Burial will be at Long Island National Cemetery with her late husband.
