Audrey Mae Straub O’Hearn, age 89 (though she “stopped counting at 29”), passed peacefully on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, with daughter Stephanie by her side, at Trustbridge Hospice in Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida.
Born in St. Louis to Louis and Mary Elizabeth (Burke) Straub, Audrey was the youngest of four children. She was preceded in death by her cherished brothers Louis and Bill, and darling sister Dorothy. Audrey attended Harris Teachers College in St. Louis, but her education there was interrupted when Audrey and two girlfriends headed to Fort Lauderdale for a brief vacation. Tired of snow and cold weather, and much preferring the sun and the sand, Audrey and dear friend Jo Mlinarich opted to return to Florida permanently. Audrey landed a job at Bahia Mar Marina. Starting as secretary, Audrey later became the first woman Harbor Master of Bahia Mar—and in the United States. Bahia Mar was good to Audrey, as that is where she met the love of her life, Edward Theodore “Ted” O’Hearn. Married in Lauderdale in 1953, Audrey and Ted had daughter Linda the following year. Five years later, Stephanie was born, and the family moved to Boca Raton. Audrey worked at the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, where she was one of the organizers of the town’s Boca de Fiesta celebrations. While employed at the Chamber, Mrs. O’Hearn met businessman Peter Blum, who hired her to work for his company, Blum’s of Boca. Hard-working, dedicated, and honest, Audrey later became a vice-president of the respected furniture company. Audrey felt she had a family at home, as well as at work. Adding to her family, daughter Stephanie gave birth to Audrey and Ted’s granddaughter, Kerri Lyn, the light of their lives. While working full-time, Audrey fulfilled a lifelong dream. She went back to college. The determined straight A student earned a B.A. in Business Law from Barry University. After retirement from Blum’s, Audrey continued to work, while caring for Ted. Audrey was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ted, and is remembered as the heart and compass of the family by her daughters Linda O’Hearn Haynes (husband Jeffrey) and Stephanie O’Hearn Molyneux (husband Bernard), and granddaughter Kerri Lyn Adkins.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, September 22, from 1:30-3:00 p.m., with the memorial service following at 3:00 p.m.at the Glick Family Funeral Home at 3600 N. Federal Hwy., Boca Raton, FL 33431.
Audrey’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Audrey’s name to Trustbridge Hospice or to Alzheimer’s Research Foundation: Supporting Research for a Cure.
