Arlin Voress Obituary

Arlin Gray Voress, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at home in Delray Beach, FL, after a short illness.

Born in Charleston, WV, Arlin was the son of Clyde Lennard Voress and Olive Hazel Sherman Voress. He graduated from Charleston High School and attended West Virginia University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and received a degree in chemical engineering. He served in the Navy during World War II, teaching radar and sonar in Newport News, VA. He was employed by Union Carbide Corporation for his entire 40-year career, starting as a plant engineer and retiring as Vice President of Environmental Health & Safety.

Arlin and his wife Cary Lou retired to Florida from Darien, CT, planning to trade snow and cold weather for time on the beach, boating, fishing, and travel. After moving to Highland Beach, he became involved in town government, serving on the Water Resource Advisory Board, Town Commission, and then as Mayor for three terms. Arlin was proud of the work he accomplished: expanding the water system, resolving outstanding zoning lawsuits, supporting Town employees, and expanding the Town Hall complex. He will be remembered for his no-nonsense approach to life, his mechanical and engineering skill, his devotion to family and friends, and his love of string ties.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Cary Louise Edgar Voress, daughters Elisabeth Louise Voress and Mary Ann Voress Wild, and grandchildren Matthew Claude Wild, Taylor Gray Wild, and Laura Elisabeth Wild; brother Hugh Ellison Voress; sister Shirley Lee Voress Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in Charleston, WV, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Arlin’s name be made to The Friends of the Highland Beach Library (3618 S. Ocean Blvd., Highland Beach, FL 33487).
