Maurine Ingraham Obituary

Maurine S. Ingraham, aged 88, of Boca Raton, died on April 5th, 2024 at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton after a brief illness.

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 8th, 1935 and soon moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. At age 11 her family moved to Dallas, Texas where she graduated from Highland Park High School and attended Texas Christian University.  In Fort Worth she met Clifton Dowell, her first husband and father of her two sons, Mark and David.

Cliff’s academic career included family moves to Pasadena and Davis, California, New Orleans (shepherding her family through hurricane Betsy), then Amherst, Massachusetts.  When her marriage to Cliff ended, she lived in the Boston area for many years. There she met Harold (“Hal”) Ingraham in a jazz club, sharing their love of music over the next nearly 40 years.  Maurine and Hal moved to Austin, Texas and married in 1991.   They enjoyed traveling with Hal’s actuarial business, with several trips to China and many adventures.  Eventually they settled in Boca Raton, Florida and enjoyed the warmth and a good cup of coffee on their porch every morning.

Maurine had many interests, and was a successful real estate agent in Massachusetts and Texas, as well as an insurance broker.  Later she became a corporate etiquette and international protocol consultant certified by the Protocol School of Washington, D.C. Maurine enjoyed her friends and a good game of Mahjong.

Maurine was known for her elegance and style, always “presentable.” She eventually convinced Hal to join her in a pedicure, generating a good chuckle for both of them.

Known as Grandma Mo to her grandchildren, she displayed a warmth and keen sense of humor that was beloved by those who knew her.  She is oft-quoted for her predictable vacation quip “This week, there are no rules” with just a hint of her Texas roots.  Then came out the pies, cakes and cookies.

During the pandemic, she cared for Hal and his progressive dementia and blindness, navigating on-line groceries (in her late 80’s) and his daily caregiving without help or missing a beat.  In spite of these challenges, they both maintained their good humor and a laugh. Maurine was overcome with his loss last summer.

She is survived by her sons Mark E. Dowell, MD and his wife Caryn, of Casper, Wyoming and David S. Dowell, MD and his wife Athena, of Madison, Wisconsin; 4 grandsons Dean and Garrett Dowell, JD (Mark), James and Jonathan Dowell, MD (David).

She is preceded in death by her late husband Harold Ingraham, her sister Lois Smith Bransom, and her two brothers, Dale and Darrell Smith.

The family would like to thank Martin Edep, MD, for his excellent and compassionate care of both Maurine and Hal over the last 20 years.

A private family memorial is planned for a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation.
