Reverend Timothy Maria T. Johnson, O. Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias, died on Thursday, April 14, 2016 in Gainesville, Florida after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.

 

Father Timothy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 20, 1935 to John and Annabelle Gallagher Johnson. He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his sister Eileen Bryan, two nephews, Christopher and Sean and one niece, Jennifer.

 

In 1954, the Marian Year, he was accepted as a Novice in the Order of Carmelites, North American Province of St. Elias. He professed First Vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity on September 8, 1955 and Solemn Vows on September 15, 1959 at Mount Carmel in Williamstown MA.  He was ordained to the priesthood on July 16, 1983 at St. Albert’s in Middletown, NY.   

 

As a Solemnly Professed Brother, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1966 earning dual degrees: a B.S. granted from the College of Business Administration and another B.S. from the School of Education. He continued his education at SUNY at Albany, NY and earned his Master’s Degree in Education in 1971. In 1977 he earned a second Master’s degree in Theology from Villanova University in Villanova, PA. Finally, in preparation for his Ordination to the Priesthood in 1983, he graduated from Seton Hall University in Darlington, NJ with a Masters of Divinity Degree in Pastoral Theology.

 

Following his Simple Profession in 1955, Brother Timothy began his teaching career at Mount Carmel in Auburn, NY teaching Religion and Business. He continued teaching Religion and World Literature at St. Albert’s Junior Seminary in Middletown, NY in 1968 before being assigned to St. Joseph’s Priory in Troy, NY in 1970 and assisted in the retreat Ministry at Williamstown, MA until 1973. From 1974 to 1976 he worked as a Teacher of Religion at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary School in Pottsville, PA. He continued teaching Religion at St. John College High School in Washington, DC from 1976-79 and then at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC from 1979-81. During his first year there, he was named Teacher of the Year by the student body. He also served as the Treasurer, Dean of Discipline, Director of Audio-Visual, Teacher of the Teacher’s Drug Course and was Chairman of the Religion/Evaluation Team for the Middle States Association. His professional organization involvements included serving as a member of the Carmelite School Board in Auburn, NY (1968-70), a Member of the Board of Directors at the New Leaf Drug Center, the Alcohol, Drug Abuse Commission in Pennsylvania (1973-76), and the Clinical Pastoral Education group in 1983.

 

Following his Ordination to the Priesthood in 1983, Father Timothy was assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Middletown, NY as a Parochial Vicar. He also served as the Director of Religious Education for the parish. In 1984 he was in residence at the Stella Maris Parish in Philadelphia, PA before transferring to Our Lady of the Scapular Parish on 28th Street, New York, NY in 1985 where he served as a Staff Chaplain at Bellevue Hospital until 1988. Father Timothy was the Parochial Vicar and DRE at Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown, NY from 1988-91 and then Parochial Vicar and DRE at St. Joseph’s Parish in Troy, NY from 1991-92.

 

From 1992 until 2006, Father Timothy served as Parochial Vicar at St. Jude’s Parish in Boca Raton, FL during which time he became the Director of F.I.N.D., a dating service for single, widowed and divorced Catholics. He retired in 2007 to St. Elias Priory in Coral Springs, FL and returned to St. Jude Priory in Boca Raton, FL in 2012 where he resided until his death.

 

Always the teacher and spiritual man, Father Timothy most enjoyed his Carmelite journey. He dedicated much of his free time in extolling his love for Saint Therese and promoted the distribution of her rose-scented oils. A dedicated, faithful and hard-working Carmelite, Father Timothy Maria T.  Johnson, O. Carm. was a professed member of the Carmelite Order for 60 years and celebrated his 32nd Jubilee of Ordination to the Priesthood on July 16, 2015. He will be greatly missed.    

 

Wake and Funeral services will take place in Boca Raton, Florida on Monday, April 18th after which Father Timothy’s body will be brought to New York. Wake and Funeral Mass information is as follows:
