Carrie Juanita “Nita” Cassis, 96, of Boca Raton, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. She was born to Nathan Straughan and Virgie Copeland in Glen Ferris, West Virginia on January 13, 1920. Nita was one of seven children and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
“Nita” is survived by her three children and their spouses, Joseph Cassis, III and his wife Joyce of Johnston, Iowa, Jeffrey Cassis and his wife Patti of Boston, Massachusetts and Debbie Rutherford and her husband David of Deerfield Beach, Florida.
She is also survived by six grandchildren…Jennifer Bautista and her husband Adrian, Caitlin Kerr and her husband James, Lindsey Rutherford, Mallory Cassis and her fiancé Kevin Stewart, Connor Cassis and his wife Christina and Jaimie Hauss and her husband Scott. Nita is also survived by 7 great grandchildren…Adelyn, Gianna and Aiden Bautista, Lila and Madison Kerr and Carter and baby girl Hauss.
Nita was a Registered nurse in Chicago, Illinois specializing in obstetrics before marrying Joseph Albert Cassis, Jr. On May 13, 1951. Following their marriage, Nita became a full time homemaker to raise their three children and serve in a variety of ways within the communities of St. Albans, West Virginia, Stamford and Danbury Connecticut and Boca Raton, Florida. She volunteered to work the polls for local, state and national elections, she organized neighborhood “CrimeWatch” initiatives in conjunction with the local police departments and sang in every church choir of which she was ever a member. She was an accomplished seamstress, and avid gardener and she loved to entertain her friends and family where, among other things, she would delight everyone with her baking. Nita’s amazing life was devoted to her faith, her family and her friends and she will be sorely missed.
